The town was an important center of trade and commerce between the Chakma Kingdom of Bangladesh and the Lushai Hills, which is now part of Mizoram. In the 19th century, the British took control of the Lushai Hills and Saiha became a part of the district of Chittagong Hill Tracts. After India gained independence in 1947, Saiha became a part of the newly created state of Assam. In 1972, Mizoram was carved out of Assam as a separate state and Saiha became a part of Mizoram.

Saiha is located in the southernmost part of Mizoram and is surrounded by dense forests and hills. The town is situated on the banks of the Kolodyne river, which is the largest river in Mizoram. As per the 2011 Census of India, the population of Saiha was 22,914. The town has a literacy rate of 91.41%, which is higher than the national average. The majority of the population in Saiha are Mizos, who are an ethnic group that forms the majority of the population in Mizoram. The town also has a significant population of Chakmas, who are an ethnic group that migrated to Mizoram from Bangladesh.
