History of Saiha

Saiha has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era when it was known as 'Saikao' or 'Saikho'. The town was an important center of trade and commerce between the Chakma Kingdom of Bangladesh and the Lushai Hills, which is now part of Mizoram. In the 19th century, the British took control of the Lushai Hills and Saiha became a part of the district of Chittagong Hill Tracts. After India gained independence in 1947, Saiha became a part of the newly created state of Assam. In 1972, Mizoram was carved out of Assam as a separate state and Saiha became a part of Mizoram.

Geography of Saiha

Saiha is located in the southernmost part of Mizoram and is surrounded by dense forests and hills. The town is situated on the banks of the Kolodyne river, which is the largest river in Mizoram. The nearest airport to Saiha is the Lengpui Airport, which is located in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. The town is well-connected by roads to other parts of Mizoram and neighboring states.

As per the 2011 Census of India, the population of Saiha was 22,914. The town has a literacy rate of 91.41%, which is higher than the national average. The majority of the population in Saiha are Mizos, who are an ethnic group that forms the majority of the population in Mizoram. The town also has a significant population of Chakmas, who are an ethnic group that migrated to Mizoram from Bangladesh.

Economy of Saiha

The economy of Saiha is primarily based on agriculture and horticulture. The town is known for its oranges, which are grown in abundance in the surrounding hills. The people of Saiha also engage in animal husbandry and fishery. The town has a few small-scale industries such as sawmills and handloom weaving units.
