Mamit is a district located in the northwestern part of the Indian state of Mizoram. It is one of the eight districts of Mizoram, covering an area of 3025 square kilometers. The district is situated at an elevation of 907 meters above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests, hills, and valleys. Mamit was originally inhabited by various tribes, including the Lusei, Chakma, and Hmar. The district was part of the Lushai Hills district during the British colonial era. After India's independence in 1947, the Lushai Hills district became part of the Indian state of Assam. In 1972, Mizoram became a Union Territory, and Mamit was one of the four districts of Mizoram. In 1987, Mizoram became a full-fledged state, and Mamit continued to be one of its districts.
Mamit is located in the northwestern part of Mizoram and shares borders with Bangladesh to the west and north, Assam to the east, and the district of Kolasib to the south. The Tlawng River, a major river in Mizoram, flows through the district. Mamit is hilly, and the highest peak in the district is the Lengpui peak, which is 1686 meters high. According to the 2011 census, Mamit has a population of 85,757, of which 43,076 are males and 42,681 are females.
