Ri Bhoi is a district in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created on 4 June 1992, with Nongpoh as its district headquarters. The district is located in the eastern part of the state, and it shares its borders with the state of Assam to the north and east, East Khasi Hills district to the south and West Khasi Hills district to the west. 

History

Ri Bhoi district was carved out of the erstwhile East Khasi Hills district on 4 June 1992. The district has a rich history, and it was ruled by the Khasi tribes for centuries. The Khasi Hills were known as the Khasi-Jaintia Hills in the past, and it was ruled by the Khasi Kingdom. The British colonized the region in the 19th century, and it became a part of the Assam province. After India's independence, Meghalaya was created as an autonomous state in 1972, and Ri Bhoi became a part of it.

Geography

Ri Bhoi district covers an area of 2448 square kilometers, and it is situated at an altitude of 1,371 meters above sea level. The district is located in the eastern part of Meghalaya, and it has a hilly terrain. The district is drained by the Umiam River, which is a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River. The Umiam Lake, which is an artificial lake, is located in the district and it is a major tourist attraction.
