The district covers an area of 514 sq. km and is situated at an altitude of 780 meters above sea level. The district is located in the Manipur Valley, and the Imphal River flows through it. The district has a total population of around 422,168, according to the 2011 census. The majority of the population is composed of the Meitei community, who make up around 67% of the population.
