History

Chandel has a rich and varied history. The district was part of the Manipur kingdom, which was ruled by various monarchs for centuries. During the British colonial era, the region was annexed by the British and became part of British India. After India gained independence in 1947, Manipur became a part of the Union of India.

Chandel was initially a sub-division of the Churachandpur district, but it was later made into a separate district in 2016. The district has been the site of many historic events, including the Battle of Chandel, which was fought between the British and the Japanese during World War II.
