Kartik Purnima is celebrated as the light festival of Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the first Guru of the Sikh religion. Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the originator of Sikhism, was born on April 15, 1469 at a place called Talwandi. Presently this place is in Pakistan. It was only after his birth that Talwandi was renamed Nankana. Do you know about those gurudwaras to which the history of Sri Guru Nanak Dev is associated? Let us tell you about those gurdwaras which are related to the history of Sri Guru Nanak Dev. Gurdwara Nankana Sahib is a major Gurudwara of Sikhism. It was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to mark the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev. Sikh Temples or Gurdwaras are some of the most beautiful constructions in the world. The word Gurdwara means "Gurus Gate" and it is a place of worship. Following are the famous Sikh temples in India:

Gurdwara Ber Sahib, Punjab

Gurdwara Ber Sahib is located in the city of Sultanpur in Kapurthala. It was from this place that the journey of Sri Guru Nanak Dev started as a Sikh Guru. According to the history of Sikh religion, it is said that when Sri Guru Nanak Dev went to take a bath in the Kali Ben river, he saw a light in the river. He disappeared with that light and returned as a Sikh Guru after 3 days. Sri Guru Nanak Dev lived here for about 15 years. He had planted a plum tree here which is a major center of attraction for the tourists.

Gurdwara Manikaran Sahib, Manali

Gurudwara Manikaran is situated on Parvati mountain in Manali. Its height from the ground is about 1760 meters. Sri Guru Nanak Dev came here in 1574 with five of his followers. This Gurudwara is famous not only for religious reasons but also because of its beauty. 4000 devotees can stay in this gurudwara simultaneously. It is said that Sri Guru Nanak Dev found a hot spring here in which he made uncooked food disappear and it reappeared after cooking. This story is also recorded in the autobiography of Bhai Madarn.

Gurdwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, Assam

This Gurudwara is situated in the Dhubri city of Assam near the Brahmaputra river. Sri Guru Nanak Dev came to Dhubri in 1505 AD while coming from Dhaka towards Assam. After Sri Guru Nanak Dev, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh also came here in the 9th century. In this gurdwara, three copies of the Guru Granth Sahib are kept in a rectangular verandah.

Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila, Delhi

This Gurudwara is located close to ISBT Kashmere Gate in North Delhi. It is considered to be the oldest Sikh temple in Delhi. It is believed that the temple is named after a hill where Majnu met Guru Nanak. Which is located on the Outer Ring Road in Delhi. It is said that during the reign of Sultan Sikandar Shah Lodi (1489-1517), a Muslim Sufi named Abdullah used to live here. He used to get people across the Yamuna river with his boat without any money. He wanted to have a glimpse of God, he was so lost in these thoughts that people started calling him Majnu. When Sri Guru Nanak Dev visited this place, he attained enlightenment from Guru Nanak Dev and became a disciple of a great Guru. Sikh military leader Badyel Singh stayed here in 1783 and Majnu Ka Tila was made a Gurdwara. Later, the sixth guru of the Sikh religion, Sri Guru Har Gobind, also stayed here when he was summoned by Emperor Jahangir. Then Maharaja Ranjit Singh spent the income from his jagir in the maintenance of this historic gurudwara. In 1950, the Delhi Sangat had made this Gurudwara a bigger Gurudwara.

Gurdwara Pathar Sahib, Jammu and Kashmir

Thousands of devotees visit this gurudwara in Jammu and Kashmir every year. Sri Guru Nanak Dev reached Jammu and Kashmir via Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet in 1517 after giving his sermon on Mount Sumer. It is said that when Sri Guru Nanak Dev was absorbed in the devotion of God, a demon had dropped a big stone on him from the mountain, but as soon as he touched Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the stone turned into wax and the back of his body. The part sank into stone. The mark of the body of Shri Guru Nanak Dev, which was sunk in the stone, is still present on the stone.

Gurdwara Hari Mandir Sahib, Amritsar

Hari Mandir Sahib Gurdwara is the most famous Gurudwara in India. It is located in Amritsar and is popularly known as Gurdwara Golden Temple. The Golden Temple has four gates indicating that the Sikhs adore people from all walks of life.

Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib, Punjab

This holy temple is one of the best Gurudwaras in India. The architecture of this nine-storey tower is different from other Sikh temples in India. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Punjab

Damdama Sahib is also one of the Sikh Takhts and is also a historically important place as it is the place where Guru Gobind Singh wrote the Bir Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Patna

Takht Sri Patna Sahib is located in Patna. The Gurdwara was built in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1780.  

Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila

This Gurudwara is located close to ISBT Kashmere Gate in North Delhi. It is considered to be the oldest Sikh temple in Delhi. It is believed that the temple is named after a hill where Majnu met Guru Nanak.

Gurdwara Mattan Sahib, Jammu and Kashmir

Gurdwara Matan Sahib is located on Anantnag-Pahalgam road. Gurdwara Matan Sahib was built on the site of the ruined temples. It is one of the most popular holy places in Kashmir today and apart from Sikh devotees, Brahmins also worship here. Address: Mattan Gopalpur Rd, Mattan, 192125  

Gurdwara Chwin Patshahi Thara Sahib, Jammu and Kashmir

Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi Thara Sahib was built to honor the visit of the 6th Sikh Guru, Guru Har Gobind Singh. This holy place is located in Singhpura village, close to Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir.  

Gurdwara Sehra Sahib, Punjab

Gurdwara Sehra Sahib is located in the city of Sultanpur Lodhi in Punjab. It is believed that the Sehra ritual of Har Gobind Singh took place here. Hence the name of the Gurdwara built here was named Gurdwara Sehra Sahib.

Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Achalnagar Sahib Gurdwara, Maharashtra

Gurdwara Nanak Jhira Sahib, Karnataka

It is one of the most important Gurudwaras in India and is located in Bidar, Karnataka. Today the Gurudwara is visited by a large number of devotees thrice a year on Holi, Dussehra and the birthday of Guru Nanak.

Gurdwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib, Uttarakhand

Hemkunt Sahib is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is famous for its architecture. Dedicated to the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Sahib, Gurdwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib is situated at an altitude of over 4000 meters above sea level. It is a star-shaped gurudwara specially designed keeping in mind the season.

Gurdwara Rewalsar, Himachal Pradesh

It was built to honor Guru Gobind Sahib. Gurdwara Rewalsar is located in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. It is said that the Gurudwara was constructed at the same place where Guru Gobind Sahib met Raja Siddha Sen of Mandi.

Gurudwara Naduan, Himachal Pradesh

Gurdwara Daswin Patshahi is located in Nadaun, a village in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. This holy place was built in the memory of the second battle fought by Guru Gobind Singh.

Gurdwara Shree Narayan Hari, Kullu

It is popularly known as Manikaran Sahib. Gurudwara Shree Narayan Hari is located in Manikaran, about 45 kms from Kullu. The Gurudwara is the end result of 50 years of continuous struggle put up by Baba Narayan Hari.

Gurdwara Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
