It is 343 kilometers (213 mi) southeast of Guwahati. Silchar is surrounded by the Barel Hills in the north, Mizo Hills in the south, Manipur in the east and Bangladesh in the west. Silchar is called The, City of Love. Rice is the staple grain. Fish is also widely consumed. Shukki (local name for dried fish) Shield chutney and Chung-ar Petha (sticky rice cake prepared under bamboo sticks) are some of the local dishes. It is known for its temples and their captivating stories. The ISKCON temple and building in the city, Kancha Kanti Kali s temple are popular sites. There is a tunnel of Maniharan just a short distance from the Bhawan temple, and it is said that this tunnel was used by Bal Krishna. About 20 kilometers from the city, Khaspur is home to the rulers of the great Dimasa kingdom.
Maibong is a magnificent landscape which consists of stone carving statues and ruined temples of the ancient state. Bhubaneshwar Temple is 50 km from here and devotees of Lord Shiva are specially visited during the festival of Shivaratri. Other places of interest include Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Temple, Maniharan Tunnel and Gandhibagh Park. Hajo Pav in Hajo is a pilgrimage center for followers of the religion of Islam, Jatinga is a beautiful village in the south of Haflong. Martyr s Tomb Gandhi Bagh, which is home to 11 martyrs cabras. There are many waterfalls nearby which attracts a lot to this wonderful place. It is also famous for its tea gardens. It has beautiful large green tea plantations which are very breathtaking. The quality of the tea is amazing, facilitated by supportive atmospheric conditions. Tea grown here is also exported abroad.
Silchar has its airport named Kumbhirgram Airport, which is about 22 kilometers from the city center. It is a domestic airport, with regular flights from major Indian cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal. Airlines like Indigo, SpiceJet, and Air India operate regular flights to Silchar.
Silchar is connected to other major cities in the northeastern region of India through a network of highways. National Highway 27 connects Silchar to Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, and National Highway 53 connects it to Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. There are regular bus services from cities like Guwahati, Shillong, and Imphal to Silchar.
Silchar has its railway station named Silchar Railway Station, which is well-connected to major Indian cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, and New Delhi. Some popular trains that run to Silchar are the Cachar Express, Barak Valley Express, and the Poorvottar Sampark Kranti Express.
