Kokrajhar is a town located in the western part of the state of Assam, in northeastern India. The town is situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, near the border with the state of West Bengal. Kokrajhar is the administrative headquarters of the Kokrajhar district, which was formed in 1983.

History

The history of Kokrajhar can be traced back to the ancient period. It was a part of the Kamarupa kingdom, which was ruled by the Varman dynasty. The region saw the rise and fall of several dynasties like the Kachari, Chutiya, and Koch kingdoms. The Ahom kingdom, which ruled over Assam for six centuries, also had an impact on the region.

The British established their rule over Assam in the early 19th century. The town of Kokrajhar was founded by the British in 1901. During the British period, Kokrajhar was a part of the Goalpara district. In 1952, Kokrajhar became a part of the newly created district of Dhubri. Later, in 1983, Kokrajhar became a district in its own right.

Geography

Kokrajhar is located at an altitude of 49 meters above sea level. The town is situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, which is one of the major rivers in India. The Brahmaputra River is known for its high current and floods during the monsoon season. The town is surrounded by hills on three sides, which provide a scenic view of the landscape.

Kokrajhar has a population of around 100,000 people, according to the 2011 census. The majority of the population is made up of the Bodo ethnic group, who are the original inhabitants of the region. Other ethnic groups include the Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, and Santhal. The Bodo language is the most widely spoken language in Kokrajhar, followed by Assamese and Bengali.

Kokrajhar's economy is primarily based on agriculture. The fertile land in the region is suitable for growing crops like paddy, jute, and mustard. The town is also known for its production of bamboo and cane handicrafts. Small-scale industries like rice mills, oil mills, and sawmills are also present in the town. The Bwisagu festival, which is celebrated in April, is one of the most important festivals in the region.
